Merced has always been a place of resilience, determination, and community—a spirit that aligns perfectly with the philosophy of Bruce Lee. This past March, we had the incredible opportunity to host a fundraiser supporting the Bruce Lee Foundation, bringing together food, martial arts, and storytelling to honor Bruce Lee’s enduring legacy.

This event wasn’t just about raising funds—it was about inspiring the next generation, just as Bruce Lee did through his martial arts and teachings. With the goal of bringing a Bruce Lee Summer Camp to Merced for youth, the fundraiser created a space where attendees could connect over food, culture, and the power of self-improvement.
The Inspiration Behind the Event
The idea for this fundraiser began last year when I was in discussion to bring Shannon Lee, Bruce Lee’s daughter, to UC Merced as part of Women in History Month in March 2025. While planning her visit, I learned more about the Bruce Lee Foundation’s mission—helping kids and teens build confidence through martial arts and personal development programs. That mission resonated deeply, and I knew Merced would be the perfect place to help expand that impact.
We set out to create an event that honored Bruce Lee’s philosophy while celebrating local community partnerships. The plan? A social hour with Asian-inspired appetizers, a fundraiser with a drawing for Bruce Lee swag prizes.

Building a Community-Driven Event
To host the event, we partnered with Tioga Sequoia Brewing, a perfect setting for a relaxed but meaningful gathering. Our team put together an array of Asian-fusion appetizers, blending flavors from across the continent. The menu featured small bites inspired by traditional dishes, with fresh, locally sourced ingredients—a nod to both Merced’s agricultural heritage and Bruce Lee’s belief in balance and adaptability.
We also hosted a book giveaway on Instagram as a lead-up to the event, giving away copies of Shannon Lee’s book, Be Water, My Friend. This contest allowed us to engage with the community, spark conversations about Bruce Lee’s teachings, and build excitement for the fundraiser.

A Zero-Cost Fundraiser Made Possible by Community Support
One of the most rewarding aspects of this event was that it was a zero-cost fundraiser—every dollar raised went directly to the Bruce Lee Foundation thanks to the generosity of our community.
- Volunteer chefs donated their time and talents to prepare an array of Asian-fusion appetizers, ensuring that guests enjoyed high-quality, flavorful dishes.
- Daylight Foods and CreamCo Meat generously donated fresh vegetables and meats, allowing us to highlight local and sustainably sourced ingredients in the menu.
- Tioga Sequoia Merced Taproom graciously provided the venue, giving us the perfect space to host this gathering and bring people together in a welcoming environment.
By keeping costs at zero, we maximized the impact of every contribution, proving once again that when a community comes together with a shared purpose, great things can happen.
The Impact and What Comes Next
The energy at the event was incredible. Seeing people come together, inspired by Bruce Lee’s message, reinforced why we do this kind of work. The fundraiser was a success, not just in financial contributions but in building momentum for future partnerships.
With the support of our guests, we are hoping to start next steps toward bringing the Bruce Lee Summer Camp to Merced. This initiative has the potential to empower young people through martial arts, leadership, and personal growth, and I’m excited to continue building this bridge between Merced and the Bruce Lee Foundation.
A huge thank you to everyone who attended, donated, and supported this effort. This is just the beginning, and I look forward to seeing how we can keep Bruce Lee’s spirit of perseverance and self-betterment alive in our community.

Stay tuned for more updates, and as always—be water, my friend.
