Exploring Black Culinary Legacy: A Journey of Discovery

This Black History Month, I embarked on a profound exploration of the rich tapestry of Black contributions to the culinary world. It’s disheartening to admit that my awareness was not as informed as it should have been about the pivotal role Black individuals have played in shaping the American food landscape. Here are some of my recommendations to read or watch.

1. “We Are Each Other’s Harvest” by Natalie Baszile

This remarkable book delves into the interconnectedness of African American farmers and their crucial role in the history of American agriculture. It’s a poignant reminder of the strength found in community and the resilience required to navigate the complexities of the food system. Natalie’s book inspired the chef team at UC Merced to start a BIPOC produce purchasing program.

2. “High On the Hog” on Netflix

A visually stunning and deeply enlightening series that traces the roots of African American culinary traditions. Through the lens of food, it unveils the profound impact of Black culture on American cuisine and highlights the enduring strength and creativity of Black chefs throughout history. Season 2 is available to watch on Netflix now.

3. “Southern Food and Civil Rights: Feeding the Revolution” by Frederick Douglass Opie

This insightful read explores the intersection of food and civil rights, shedding light on how meals became a powerful tool for activism. It’s a must-read for anyone interested in understanding the pivotal role food played in the fight for justice and equality.

4. “Black Food: Stories, Art, and Recipes from Across the African Diaspora” edited by Bryant Terry

A culinary anthology that takes you on a global journey through the diverse and vibrant flavors of the African diaspora. Filled with captivating stories, beautiful art, and delicious recipes, this book is a celebration of the cultural richness that defines Black food.

Let’s use this month as an opportunity to amplify Black voices in the culinary world and acknowledge the profound impact of Black individuals on our collective food heritage. Let’s continue to educate ourselves, foster inclusivity, and celebrate the diversity that makes our culinary landscape so extraordinary.

Let’s not limit our support to just one month; let’s make it a year-round commitment. Remember to frequent and support Black-owned businesses in your neighborhood, ensuring that our communities thrive together.
