Inspiring Change: Why I Started My Recent UC Merced Speaker Series

Greetings, UC Merced community!

It is with immense excitement and a vision for positive transformation that I share the inspiration behind the upcoming speaker series at our beloved campus. Motivated by a desire to bring the same caliber of guest speaker programming to UC Merced that is often experienced in larger, bustling cities and campuses, I embarked on a mission to bridge this gap and enhance the cultural vibrancy of our community. While the Central Valley has long been a wellspring of diverse talent, the opportunity for our students and residents to engage with influential speakers on a regular basis has been a missing piece. This initiative is a celebration of the richness that our campus and the city of Merced deserve, and it marks a pivotal step towards cultivating an atmosphere of intellectual curiosity, inspiration, and shared experiences. Join us on this exciting journey as we bring a new era of thought-provoking discussions and cultural celebrations to UC Merced!

I am delighted to share some exciting developments in my ongoing collaboration with UC Merced’s Division of Equity, Justice, and Inclusive Excellence. Our commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment continues to thrive, and we are thrilled to announce an upcoming series of events that promise to enrich our campus community.

Diverse Voices, Inspiring Perspectives

In early February, March and April 2024, UC Merced will play host to a remarkable lineup of guest speakers, each bringing a unique perspective and a wealth of experiences to share. These events aim to inspire, educate, and foster a deeper sense of understanding within our community.

Arthur Moye III – CEO of Full Circle Brewing in February

Arthur Moye III, the visionary CEO behind Full Circle Brewing, the largest black-owned brewery in the United States, will grace our campus. Join us as he shares insights into entrepreneurship, leadership, and the craft brewing industry. Our Lakeside catering team will be making some delectable appetizers incorporating Full Circle Brewing beers for the networking reception that will follow the presentation.

Natalie Baszile – Author Extraordinaire in March

Renowned author Natalie Baszile, known for her impactful works such as “We Are Each Other’s Harvest” and “Queen Sugar,” will be sharing her perspectives on family, culture, and resilience. Prepare to be captivated by her words and wisdom. Her book “We Are Each Other’s Harvest” has been the inspiration for UC Merced’s Dining’s recently implemented “BIPOC Produce Purchasing Program” which has supported over 20 local BIPOC farmers with over 30,000 pounds of vibrant and fresh local produce being featured in across our dining operations. As a precursor to her visit in March, I will be hosting a “We Are Each Other’s Harvest” book giveaway for Black History Month. Natalie generously offered to autograph each copy.

Brenae Royal – From Local Roots to Global Leadership in March

Local hero Brenae Royal, who grew up just 15 minutes from UC Merced in Atwater, will also be joining us. Featured in a chapter of “We Are Each Other’s Harvest,” Brenae is currently the North Coast Operations Manager for E&J Gallo Wine. A former 4-H kid, Royal oversees 575 acres, of which about 250 are planted to prime Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel grapes at Monte Rosso Vineyards. Brenae is an active advocate for improving involvement and advancement of Black people in agriculture and winemaking. Her journey from our local community to a leadership role in a prominent wine company is truly inspiring.

A Culinary Extravaganza with Chef Ed Porter in April

In addition to these thought-provoking speakers, we have a special treat for our community in April. We are honored to host renowned Chef Ed Porter at UC Merced Dining! Chef Ed will showcase his culinary expertise, presenting a diverse array of flavors while championing local BIPOC farmers. It’s a unique opportunity to indulge in an unforgettable culinary experience that celebrates both taste and community.

But that’s not all – Chef Ed Porter is not just a culinary maestro but also a gifted musician. Immerse yourself in the ambiance of his soulful tunes, streaming live in the YWDC during the event. It’s a delightful blend of gastronomy and music that promises a memorable experience for all.
