Introduction: As we bid farewell to 2023, it’s time to reflect on the incredible journey we’ve embarked on together through our Guest Speaker Series and successful fundraising events. This year has been filled with culinary delights, meaningful connections, and impactful initiatives that have left a lasting mark on our community.
January: Kicking off the year with a burst of flavor, Chef Tu David Phu joined us for an unforgettable Bloodline Documentary Screening and Cooking Collaboration at Rainbird. This event not only satisfied our taste buds but also raised funds for a cause close to our hearts—the Boys and Girls Club of Merced County. We raised over $2,000 that was to go towards the Cooking with Kids Camp program. For those of you who may have missed the screening of Bloodline, you can watch the film on YouTube. I highly recommend it. Also, Chef Tu will be presenting at a TEDx Talk at UC Berkley this month. Much gratitude to Chef Tu for sharing his talents with us in Merced.

March: Our journey through the world of culinary experiences continued in March with an Olive Oil Tasting Class featuring Corto Olive Oil. This educational and delectable event was followed by a sumptuous Olive Oil 5-course meal, creating a memorable dining experience for all.
April: In April, we celebrated Earth Day and Stop Food Waste Day with a unique Salvage Social Hour Fundraiser which was hosted at the El Capitan Hotel. Joined by Guest Chef Phil Saneski, we supported UC Merced’s Bobcat Pantry, a vital resource for food-insecure students. Over 100 supporters attended, and we raised over $2,000 for the cause. We also hosted our inaugural Meet the Farmer Event in April with Marc Marchini from J. Marchini Farms—the largest radicchio grower in the United States. The Chef team created some delicious dishes featuring J. Marchini Farms produce for the reception.

June: Welcoming the Monterey Bay American Culinary Federation to UC Merced, we had the privilege of hearing inspiring stories from Way of Life Farms, Marc Marchini, Danny Royer, and Cru Winery. This event allowed us to deepen our understanding of the agricultural world and the dedication behind our local produce.
September: As part of LatinX Heritage Month, Inspira Studios presented their documentary, “Strawberry Picker,” about renowned artist Juan Fuentes, which was followed by a Director’s Talk Back with Eugenia Renteria. After the screening, a strawberry-themed food and beverage reception, including a delightful local brew from Tioga Sequoia Brewing—Half Dome Wheat with Strawberry. Shout out to Tioga Sequioa Brewing for the sponsorship of their tasty beer!

October: In October, our events continued to celebrate diversity in farming. Ross Koda from Koda Farms and Uka Sake, along with Farmer Lena from the Humble Rice Farmer, shared their inspiring stories and perspectives on farming. Koda Rice Farms has been growing and milling rice in Merced County since 1910. Personally, my family has been eating their rice and using their Blue Star Rice Flour since the 70’s. Give their rice a try if you haven’t had a chance yet. Farmer Lena has multiple things going on, including recently starting the Humble Rice Bowl, which features Hmong Fusion Cuisine! Yum!
November: Cafe Ohlone visited UC Merced. We had the privilege of immersing ourselves in the captivating celebration of Native American History Month at our event, “Indigenous Insights: Café Ohlone’s Culinary Journey.” The team from Café Ohlone shared their poignant story and showcased centuries-old recipes, inviting attendees to experience the deep cultural significance of Ohlone cuisine. From foraged ingredients to time-honored cooking techniques, participants savored the unique flavors of the land and sea. The event was a beautiful tapestry of storytelling, tradition, and community as we honored the resilience and contributions of the Ohlone people while reflecting on the importance of preserving and revitalizing Indigenous cultures. It was an unforgettable evening that not only celebrated history but also served as a reminder of the ongoing journey to support and uplift Indigenous communities.
Conclusion: As we conclude this remarkable year, I want to express my gratitude to everyone who has been a part of these events. Together, we’ve created moments of joy, learning, and community impact. Looking forward to another year of culinary exploration and meaningful connections in 2024. Cheers to the memories we’ve made and the positive change we’ve inspired!
