Introduction: In a captivating and enriching event at UC Merced, for Native American Heritage Month in collaboration with UC Merced’s EJIE team, Cafe Ohlone took center stage, offering a unique blend of history, culture, and delectable cuisine. Vincent Medina and Louis Trevino, the talented team behind Cafe Ohlone, shared not just recipes but also stories that brought to life the rich heritage of the Ohlone people.
A Taste of Ohlone Tradition
The event began with an introduction to the Ohlone people, highlighting their deep connection to the land and the importance of preserving their traditions. Vincent and Louis, both passionate about reviving and sharing their cultural heritage, discussed the significance of Ohlone cuisine and language in preserving their identity.
The Culinary Journey
Attendees were treated to a taste of some traditional Ohlone dishes, each with a story of its own. From chia pudding with bay leaf blackberry coulis, to walnut oil roasted fingerling potatoes and a traditional Ohlone salad, the guests thoroughly enjoyed the dishes. Shout out to Vincent and Louis for generously sharing their recipes and the UC Merced Lakeside chefs for preparing the dishes.
Sharing Stories
Vincent and Louis went beyond the culinary aspect, weaving a narrative that connected the audience to the history of the Ohlone people. Through personal anecdotes and tales passed down through generations, they painted a vivid picture of Ohlone life, highlighting the challenges faced by their community and the resilience that has allowed them to preserve their culture. They also shared their dream of “Ohlone Land” a visionary project that intertwines cultural restoration, sustainable land management, and a culinary experience rooted in tradition. This ambitious initiative seeks to reclaim and rejuvenate East Bay land, providing a vibrant space for culinary exploration, education, and the revitalization of Ohlone cultural practices.
Cultural Preservation through Cuisine
Cafe Ohlone, with its unique approach to blending traditional recipes with a contemporary twist, is not just a restaurant but a platform for cultural preservation. Vincent and Louis spoke about their mission to educate and create awareness about Ohlone history and culture, using food as a medium to bridge the gap between the past and the present. They plan on bringing this experience to “Ohlone Land” which will feature three gastronomic experiences. There will be three interconnected restaurant spaces, each offering a unique gastronomic experience. A sun-lit tearoom surrounded by native plants will serve gathered teas and small bites, fostering a direct connection with the vibrant flora. A wooden lounge, inspired by historical Sunol Rancheria houses, will offer an intimate setting adorned with Ohlone baskets and traditional artifacts. The marquee dining space, inside a grand thatched tule house, will provide a land-to-table experience with courses of beautifully plated Ohlone cuisine.
Audience Engagement
The event encouraged active participation from the audience, fostering a sense of community and understanding. Attendees had the opportunity to ask questions and share their thoughts. Guests were also extremely excited to hear Cafe Ohlone is planning to reopen in March of 2024. Many of the guests were excitedly planning trips to Berkeley to experience the food and ambiance of Cafe Ohlone in person, myself included.
